1st first geographical indication accredited

The French IP office has recently accredited the first geographical indication for manufactured and handmade products and the lucky winner is the “Liffos seat”…

Reserved domain of alimentary products like wines or cheeses for a long while, the protection of geographical indications has been opened to manufactured and handmade products, by the law of March 17, 2014.

Immediately, lots of manufacturers associations filed requests for accreditation for products very well-known by the public like the savon de Marseille (soap of Marseille) or the Mauleon’s espadrille.

Finally, a more confidential geographical indication received the first accreditation: the Liffol Seat.

This geographical indication offers a particular protection to the know-how for the creation of chair in the area of Liffol in Lorraine.

Apart from having the guarantee that their know-how will be preserved and protected, the businessmen enjoying this new “label” will have the opportunity to take a significant economic advantage from it. Indeed, obtaining a geographical indication like a protected designation of origin (AOC in French) leads to a valorisation of know-how and is a token of quality for the consumer, at the very moment when Made in France is claimed, even solicited.

Besides, the obtaining of the geographical indication will result in the preservation of jobs in a region hardly hit by unemployment and even supports employment, just like it will support investments and economic development of companies in the region.

The protection of know-how by means of geographical indications is thus an investment on the future, where businessmen and consumers take out again winners from it.
